PIONEERING THE PELOTON
Tour de France
All the way back in 2015, we at Friends & Fellows were at the forefront of a groundbreaking venture in the world of sports media. For the first time, GoPro, in partnership with Velon and the ASO (Amaury Sport Organisation), decided to place GoPro cameras on the bikes of riders in the Tour de France. This initiative was unprecedented, and we were entrusted with managing the entire production process, marking a significant milestone in sports broadcasting.
The Tour de France is not just any sporting event; it's the world's third-largest sports media event, watched by millions globally. The challenge for us was monumental. We had to devise creative and logistical solutions for an undertaking never attempted before. Integrating over 30 GoPro cameras at the same time into the peloton, which each recorded for several hours, was just the tip of the iceberg. Our task was to coordinate with the Tour's existing media team, curate the footage, and deliver it to a global audience, sometimes within minutes or hours of recording.
THE CHALLENGE
Understanding the scale of this project, we assembled a team of specialists, each a master in their field, to handle the various facets of this complex task. Our approach was multi-pronged: ensuring the reliable functioning of the cameras during the rigorous race, effectively managing the massive volume of footage, and coordinating closely with the Tour de France's media team for seamless integration of our content. The aim was to provide viewers with an immersive experience of the peloton like never before.
THE SOLUTION
The outcome was nothing short of revolutionary. For the first time, millions of Tour de France fans witnessed the race from an entirely new perspective - right from the heart of the action. Our collaboration with GoPro, Velon, and ASO not only set a new standard in sports broadcasting but also showcased our ability at Friends & Fellows to handle large-scale, innovative projects under high-pressure conditions. This venture not only expanded our horizons but also left an indelible mark on the world of sports media, bringing fans closer to the excitement of the Tour de France than ever before.
